Smoking and obesity may help accelerate the aging process
Bad news for the smokers and the people experiencing obesity. Obesity and smoking speed up the aging process, according to a study published online by the Lancenet. Thhe study included 1,122 women – 1119 obese (with a body mass index or BMI greater than 30), 85 non-obese (BMI under 20), 531 nonsmokers, 369 ex-smokers, and 203 current smokers. Ages of the participants spans from 18 to 76…
The study researchers asked the participants to answer a questionnaire on smoking history and recknoed the participant’s leptin (a body regulator) concentration and telomere size. (Telomeres are repeated DNA sequences that cap the chromosomes and protect the chromosomes from degradaton). As people get older, their telomere get shorter, though). They discovered that telomere length decreased steadily with age and that the telomeres of obese women and smokers were much shorter that those of learn women and nonsmokers.
